Internet Speed & Proxy Path Test

Measures the download, upload, round trip and jitter of this connection, then reads the shape of those numbers for the extra network leg a proxy or VPN adds.

What this connection measured

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is being measured?

Three things, each separately. A series of twelve tiny round trips to our server, from which the fastest and the disagreement between consecutive samples are taken. A download of up to 24 MB, timed from its first byte to its last, so the figure is the transfer rate and not the distance. And an upload of 4 MB, timed with one measured round trip subtracted, because a browser cannot see when its own first byte left the machine.

How does a speed test show a proxy?

Not through the speed. A proxy or VPN inserts a second machine, and two things follow from that which the exit node cannot choose: the round trip grows by the leg to that machine, which the address it presents cannot account for, and the second machine's queue makes consecutive round trips disagree. The rate itself is a property of somebody's internet plan and says almost nothing — which is why a fast connection is never treated here as a suspicious one.

Can it be wrong?

Yes, in both directions, and the page says so where it happens. Busy wifi, a congested mobile cell and a satellite link all add latency and jitter that have nothing to do with a proxy. In the other direction, a proxy whose exit sits close to the real user adds little latency and will read as clean. Treat an unsettled reading as a reason to look further, never as a conclusion.

How much data does a run use?

Up to 28 MB — 24 MB down and 4 MB up — and only when you press the button. The download climbs through 1, 4, 12 and 24 MB and stops early on a slow line rather than finishing the ladder, so a mobile connection pays a fraction of that.
